XPT (Extended Pseudo Trunk) is a scalable digital trunking solution that allows you to increase the capacity of an existing conventional DMR system by simply upgrading the current RD982S repeater and DMR radios.  
 

XPT Digital Trunking System delivers up to 16 times the capacity of analog conventional mobile radio systems; a more cost effective solution that allows customers to trunk without using a dedicated control channel.   The system connects a larger number of users with voice and data turning your conventional DMR System into a virtual trunking system. XPT will now allow multiple users from various departments faster access to the system, this can increases productivity, enhance customer service and provides better dispatching to security personnel responding to emergencies.
 

XPT Allows the radio to scan time slots on the repeater and dynamically choose an open time slot to initiate a call. Less wait time is used than those who are fixed to a specific time slot. In typical systems it is not uncommon for repeaters to be busy while others remain unused, this is where XPT Digital Trunking comes into action. The XPT system broadcasts the availability of channels throughout every repeater ensuring the user will have a guaranteed channel to initiate a call.
 

Within the XPT system, groups of radios will be allocated to a "home repeater". When the home repeater is idle all calls will be made through this repeater. When the home repeater is busy the XPT system will automatically and dynamically assign a "free repeater", which temporarily provides available channels to initiate a call. Once the home repeater has an available resource the groups of radios will switch back to it. This process is repeated on the system to ensure instant communications with no interruptions or constant busy signals, no designated control channel is needed in this process. The same process works with group or all calls, all radios are move to a single repeater, freeing up the other repeaters for use, even if the radios on the call are assigned to other repeaters.

Highlights

No Dedicated Control Channel
Unlike centralized trunking systems where all activities can only be coordinated by a single control channel, XPT employs a distributed trunking protocol which does not require a dedicated control channel. This provides a great flexibility to many end users to build a trunking system in a shared channel environment.

Higher Capacity
It can support up to 8 repeaters at one site and provides 16 traffic channels. Each traffic channel can be customized to transmit voice or data, and the system can support up to 1,200 users.

Easy Migration from DMR Tier 2 Conventional
XPT can be enabled merely by upgrading the firmware version of current conventional Hytera digital radios and RD98Xs repeaters. XPT also supports the digital functions of conventional systems, providing key digital mobile radio (DMR) benefits yet using entry level digital repeater configuration.

Cost-Effective Digital Trunking Solution
XPT is a cost-effective way to migrate many older analog LTR systems to digital trunking.  It offers a system solution that can be easily installed, maintained and operated without significant capital investment.

Q: If I operate an XPT digital trunking system, do I need to apply for an FB8 license?  
A: No. because the XPT digital trunking system doesn’t require a control channel.

Q: How many carriers/traffic channels could be supported in a single-site XPT system?
A: A single site XPT system could support maximum 8 carriers (16 traffic channels). Each carrier could be used as normal channel (support both voice and data) or dedicated revert channel (only for data or voice).
 
Q: How long is the call setup time in an XPT digital trunking system?
A: 480-580ms
 
Q: Will XPT support multi-site mode?
A: The 1st version of XPT will only support single-site operation.

Q: How will XPT assign a free repeater for a group call?
A: The system will assign an index number for each repeater, and all the repeaters will broadcast a beacon signal with each repeater’s status and index number in its own channel periodically. When the 2 slots of a subscriber’s home repeater are busy, the subscriber will choose a free repeater with a minimal index number to start a new call.

Q: Will an XPT system support analog communications? 
A: The XPT trunking system operates only in digital mode. However, the subscribers support switching in XPT and DMR conventional mode without restart.  This allows them to operate in analog while in DMR conventional mode.

Q: What happens if a repeater goes down in an XPT system? 
A: If a carrier goes down, the remaining repeaters will continue to operate as an XPT Trunking System with 2 Channels less of Capacity.  The subscribers assigned to that channel will then be assigned to a free repeater on the system until their home repeater is operational again.
